Legendary Indian left-arm spinner Dilip Doshi has passed away at the age of 77 in London, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Tuesday. His death was announced a day after the sad news broke.
🇮🇳 Moment of Silence Held in Leeds
As a mark of respect, the India and England cricket teams stood together for a moment of silence before the fifth and final day of their Test match in Leeds.
📉 Late Debut, but a Memorable Career
Doshi made his international debut in 1979 at the age of 32, following the retirement of spin great Bishan Singh Bedi. Despite the late start, Doshi made an impact with his exceptional left-arm spin:
- 114 Test wickets in 33 matches
- Six five-wicket hauls
- Economy rate of just 2.25
- Reached 100 wickets in just 28 Tests
He also played 15 One Day Internationals (ODIs) before retiring in 1983, unhappy with the way Indian cricket was being managed at the time.
🏏 Domestic Giant
In first-class cricket, Doshi had an incredible record with:
- 898 wickets in 238 matches, making him one of the most successful domestic bowlers of his era.
🙏 Tributes Pour In
🔹 Sachin Tendulkar Remembers a Mentor
Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar paid a heartfelt tribute on social media:
“I met Dilipbhai for the first time in the UK in 1990, and he bowled to me in the nets on that tour. He was really fond of me, and I reciprocated his feelings. A warm-hearted soul like Dilipbhai will be deeply missed. I will miss those cricketing conversations which we invariably had.”
🔹 BCCI President Roger Binny Issues Statement
BCCI President Roger Binny also honored the former spinner:
“It is with deep sadness that we learn of the passing of Dilip Doshi. He was a true artist of spin bowling, a gentleman both on and off the field, and a dedicated servant of Indian cricket. His contribution to the game was immense and will always be remembered.”
🕯️ A Legacy of Spin and Sportsmanship
Dilip Doshi may have arrived late to the international scene, but he left behind a powerful legacy. From spinning magic on the field to mentoring young players like Tendulkar, his impact on Indian cricket remains unforgettable.
