Gujarat Sections Lagging, Project Deadline Extended
The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is experiencing delays, particularly in Gujarat, which could push the project’s completion date further. Initially expected to be completed by October 2025, the expressway is progressing at different speeds across various states, as reported by News18.
Gujarat Sections See Slow Progress
In Gujarat, the expressway stretch between Vadodara and Surat is divided into five sections. While the last 25 km section has achieved 50% progress, other sections are significantly behind:
- Surat to Maharashtra Border: Also divided into five sections, but two covering 60 km have less than 10% completion.
- Another 25 km stretch has completed less than 30% of the work.
- A 30 km section has seen nearly 50% progress.
Other States Show Better Progress
In contrast, progress in other states is moving ahead:
- Madhya Pradesh: 250 km of the expressway is already operational.
- Haryana: The main stretch is complete, with a spur nearing completion.
- Rajasthan: Some sections, including a tunnel, are pending but expected to be finished within a year.
- Maharashtra: The expressway is unlikely to be ready before late 2026.
Overall Project Status
The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway spans 1,386 km and is divided into 53 sections, including additional connecting roads. By July 2024, work on 26 sections was completed, bringing the overall progress to 82%.
Currently, 619 km of the expressway is operational, covering key routes like:
- Delhi-Dausa-Sawai Madhopur
- Jhalawar-Ratlam-MP/Gujarat border
- Vadodara-Bharuch

Once completed, the expressway will:

India’s Longest Expressway at ₹1 Lakh Crore Cost
Despite construction delays, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway has already become India’s longest expressway. The project, built at a cost of over ₹1 lakh crore, aims to enhance trade, reduce transportation costs, and support economic growth across key industrial regions.
With delays in Gujarat and Maharashtra, the final completion date remains uncertain. However, officials are optimistic that key sections will be completed soon, ensuring smoother connectivity and faster travel between India’s two largest cities.
