A Pakistani national was arrested by the Border Security Force (BSF) in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district for allegedly trying to infiltrate the India-Pakistan border, officials confirmed on Sunday.
The individual, Muhammad Hussain, has been taken into Punjab Police custody. This arrest comes amid escalating India-Pakistan tensions following the recent Pahalgam terrorist attack.
During the arrest, security forces recovered Pakistani currency and a Pakistani National Identity Card from Hussain. The incident follows a similar arrest just days earlier in Rajasthan, where a Pakistani Ranger was detained for attempting to cross into Indian territory. Preliminary investigations suggest the Ranger might have been involved in espionage or reconnaissance activities. He is currently being interrogated by the BSF.
This incident comes on the heels of the detention of BSF jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw by Pakistani forces along the international border in Punjab, after he unintentionally crossed into Pakistani territory. Despite strong protests from India, Pakistan has refused to release Shaw, who was apprehended the day after the Pahalgam attack.
While accidental border crossings are common, they are usually resolved through flag meetings, but Pakistan has refused to provide any details regarding Shaw’s case, raising concerns amidst the current security situation.
