Ahmedabad, Gujarat: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the local production of hybrid battery electrodes and flagged off the global export of Maruti Suzuki’s first Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), the e-VITARA, from the Hansalpur plant in Ahmedabad today. The electric vehicles will be shipped to over 100 countries, including Japan and several European nations.
Milestone for India’s Electric Vehicle Ecosystem
PM Modi described the day as “special for India’s journey towards self-reliance and green mobility.”
“Today, e-VITARA, made in India, will be exported to more than a hundred nations. Hybrid battery electrode production will also begin at the Gujarat plant, boosting our domestic battery ecosystem.”
The event marks a key milestone in India’s EV and clean energy sector, aligning with the government’s vision to make the country a global hub for electric mobility and advanced manufacturing.
Localized Battery Production Strengthens Self-Reliance
The TDS Lithium-Ion Battery Plant, a joint venture between Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki, will now produce over 80% of the battery value domestically. This initiative strengthens India’s green manufacturing capabilities and supports the country’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) goals.
About Maruti Suzuki’s e-VITARA
Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, unveiled the e-VITARA in January 2025 at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo. With an annual production capacity of 2.6 million units across four Indian plants, the company exported over 3.32 lakh vehicles and sold 19.01 lakh units domestically in FY25.
With the launch of e-VITARA, India will now serve as Suzuki’s global manufacturing hub for electric vehicles, enhancing the country’s clean energy and EV ecosystem.
Broader Vision for Green Mobility
These developments reflect the government’s broader strategy to:
-
Make India a global center for electric mobility and sustainable transport
-
Strengthen domestic manufacturing of batteries and EV components
-
Expand green infrastructure and clean energy initiatives
PM Modi also dedicated railway projects worth approximately Rs 1,400 crore, including the Rs 530 crore doubling of the 65 km Mahesana-Palanpur railway line, further supporting regional connectivity and development.
